Today I entered Oregon, the 8th State on my journey! Driving from Boise, ID west to Ontario, OR and via Hwy. 20 towards Burns gives one a good view of eastern Oregon's arid rangeland. There is quite a bit of irrigated farmland (primarily onions, hay land, and corn) in the valleys but the predominate native vegetation is sagebrush and other rangeland species and hilly terrain. Vale, OR is a small agricultural town near the border; the next civilization is Juntura, OR which is just a small store and oasis of trees in the middle of eastern Oregon desert.
