Change Is

It strikes me that humans are very resistant to change; lately I've been thinking of how we might all be a lot better off if we embraced change rather than spend so much time, energy, and money trying to stop it or fighting over it.

  • Climate Change
  • Aging
  • Gentrification
  • Extinction
  • Development (not in my backyard)
When the changes listed above (and others) are mentioned by the media, it is often with a negative connotation. For example, climate change is bad, aging baby boomers present problems to society, gentrification of a neighborhood prices locals out of the housing market, potential extinction of a wildlife species is terrible, etc.

Why do we focus largely on the negative aspects of change? We can't do much about some changes (I suppose we could pass laws prohibiting aging:) and even if we could, is it the best use of our limited time? What would happen if we embraced change and focused our collective energy on mitigating, adapting to, or just accepting change? I think about this in the context of recognizing that humans and the earth we inhabit are so insignificant relative to the broader universe. Wouldn't it be nice if humans could just accept that change happens and focus on living in the present?
