When I pulled into the Premier RV Resort today in Salem, OR, I asked the same question I ask in each town I visit - is there a farmers market where I can buy fresh fruit and vegetables? Farmers markets occur Wednesday and Saturday in Salem; twice a week is a real treat when traveling as much as I do but the real treat came when I was told about a local fruit stand just up the road from the RV Resort. Aspenwall's Nursery and Produce boasts a fruit stand and restaurant right next to their nursery and gardens. It is less than 1/2 mile from the RV Resort so I walked to get a little exercise after today's drive from the coast; however, I bought so much fresh fruit that I had to walk back to get my truck to carry everything:)
Aspinwall's is clearly the best fruit stand I've come across (including FMs) in my 5 months of traveling through 8 states. To be fair, the early (April) FMs were at a disadvantage; August is a bountiful time; however, this place beats all others in price and matches the best quality I've seen to date. And to top it all, they serve homemade ice cream and milkshakes with homemade whipped cream!
This place so impressed me that I inquired whether they hire seasonal help; working on the farm in exchange for a place to park my Airstream appeals to me. Spring is their busy season so too late for this year.
Aspinwall's Fruitstand in Salem, OR
Inside the Fruitstand
Great prices on fruit fresh from the farm!
Some of the largest avocados I've seen (from California)
The fruit stand also serves fresh ice cream using their own fruit!
Happy to see a sign addressing a pet peeve; people who open ears of corn. Peeling back the husks ruins the ears for everyone and hurts the farmer's profit margin.
Fresh homemade salsa!
Fresh nectarines - picked today!
Fresh blackberries and Everbearing strawberries! Yum!
Freestone peaches; tastier than Palisade peaches!
Home grown tomatoes only $1.99/pound.
Fresh Italian plums!
These apricots were fresh off the truck!
Local Gravenstein apples; you won't find these in grocery stores.
