Oregon Coast

A week after leaving Salt Lake, I landed on the Oregon coast yesterday (Sunday); staying at the Woahink Lake RV Park near Florence. Was planning to stay here a week but will move on tomorrow; this RV Park is best for folks interested in ATVing the sand dunes; not me. Unfortunately, (and surprising to me) there is a dearth of nice RV Parks along the coast; makes it tough to find a campsite since all the state park campgrounds are booked for the summer.

Not having been to either coast all year (a rarity), it is awesome to see the Pacific Ocean again! It's been over 30 years since my last trip to the central Oregon coast; forgotten how cool and foggy - a great way to beat the inland August heat!

In 1981, I turned down a graduate fellowship from OSU in Corvallis to study the northern spotted owl. I remember driving cross-country to Corvallis in my VW Rabbit to meet the professor and see the OSU campus. At the time, OSU's fellowship was only funded for the first year, while UVM offered me two years of secure funding to study neotropical migrants, so I followed the money:)

Tomorrow, I plan to head inland, driving through Corvallis on my way to a nice RV Park in Salem before returning to the coast the following week. Today, I visited Florence, OR; a nice, little, coastal town on the Siuslaw River. A bit touristy for me.
