Independence Day

While hiking in Wyoming’s Snowy Range today, it occurred to me that it has been two years and a day since I laced up my mountaineering boots. Today’s occasion was the deep snowpack in the Snowy Range. Starting at the Tipple Trailhead (10,500 feet), I quickly lost the trail due to waist-deep snow drifts. Knowing it would be wet and snowy, I was wearing my mountaineering boots and had grabbed my ice axe. The boots and axe reminded me of my last occasion for this type of gear - climbing Chopicalqui in Peru’s Cordillera Blanca.  For this latter climb, the culmination of a 19 day expedition, we summited on July 2nd. I recall how much I appreciated a hot bath and real food at the JW Marriott in Lima on Independence Day:)
