Still feeling the high from swimming my first freestyle mile on Wednesday of this week, I decided to try again today. Yesterday I worked out with a personal trainer and weights for about an hour so was a bit concerned about not having sufficient energy today; however, I've discovered that for me, key to swimming is relaxing. I used to get anxious and expend a lot of energy at the turns; now I've learned to keep calm and control my stroke and kick so my energy expenditure is relatively constant throughout. It probably didn't hurt that I ate a banana with almond butter about 1.5 hours prior to swimming:)
On Wednesday, my pace was 56 minutes for 34 laps (a mile is a smidgen over 32 laps) or 99 seconds per lap (50m). I knew I was swimming slow but wanted to ensure sufficient energy to complete a mile. Today, knowing I could do it and feeling a little more in control, my pace was 49:40 (49 minutes 40 seconds) for 32 laps or about 93 seconds per lap. Not a world record:) but I feel good about the 6 seconds/lap improvement and my overall pace; felt like I could have gone longer and maybe a bit faster. Will aim for averaging a 90 second lap next time:)
I'm so happy!
