Testosterone Levels

In an earlier blog, I mentioned my bone specialist suggested testing my testosterone levels as they affect bone density. I had this test before leaving Colorado and just received results. Evidently low testosterone levels are a cause of osteoporosis in men and my levels are very low; results and reference intervals are:

Serum - 315 (Reference Interval: 348-1197)
Free (Direct) - 3.3 (Reference Interval: 7.2-24)

Testosterone naturally decreases in men as they age and risk factors like being overweight and alcohol (none of which apply to me:) contribute to the problem. Regardless of the cause, there isn't much I can do about now since I don't have a doctor in MD; probably need to wait until the end of the summer when I decide whether to stay in MD or move back to AZ. From what I've read online, testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is a consideration but has potential serious side effects which is why many doctors treat the osteoporosis rather than TRT.

In the interim, I'm stepping up my game on natural treatment by increasing my strength training; evidently, rigorous strength training (e.g., weights) can increase testosterone levels. Have appointment with a personal trainer today at the gym!
